An information system is not one thing, but a group of things that work together. These things are called the components of the system, and they include equipment such as computers, instructions for the equipment, facts stored in the system, people to operate the system, and procedures for the people to follow.
The components work together to provide information that is used in the daily operations and in the management of an organization. Put succinctly, an information system (IS) is a collection of components that work together to provide information to help in the operations and management of an organization.
An information system may include computers, but it does not have to; people use manual information systems all the time. For example, an address book is part of an information system used in completing letters and making telephone calls. Many information systems, however, do include computers. Such a system may be called a computer information system (CIS), although often people just use the term information system when they mean one that includes computers.
In addition to computers, information systems use other types of technology, including communication equipment such as telephone lines and satellites and various devices such as fax machines, video cameras, and audio speakers. Taken together, the computers, communications equipment, and other technology used in information systems are called information technology (IT). |
